So everything is good with school. Graduate next month with my masters.

Kinja'd!!!

Job searching, trying to find someone who will actually value the masters vs. not having job experience. I don’t think that kind of job exists. Wish somebody would have told me that two years ago. I really, really hate everything right now. Kinda indiscriminately. it’s almost 2 am and I can’t get up from my computer. I need to stop browsing linkedin this late.

Now I have to worry about all the workplaces and their unique brands of bullshit, because god forbid anyone act professional or civilized these days.

Part of me just wants to blow off job searching until I actually graduate.

Sorry for all the whingeing. Have, idunno, a plymouth roadrunner.

Stick at it my man!

I have friends who completed their masters last spring and are still searching for a job.

Here, have a SR71:

well I’ll take a damn entry level before I let that happen. Or go into real estate.

The problem is that you are now “over-qualified” for an entry level.

Edit: sorry, I’m not helping with your anxiety

You’ll get there. I had weak options out of university even though I got a decent grade in mech eng. I’ve now landed in the engineering department of a housebuilders and really enjoying it.

Ive never mastered anything. But it has been a lot of fun trying...so people have even given me money to watch me try and even give me suggestions to improve. I’m currently working at being a professional adult to an 8 year old... still haven’t mastered that either.

If somebody says that to me, since I already lost the job, I will press them on what that actually means. Perhaps say some unkind things. if you can pay a qualified person less than what they are worth, why wouldn’t you?

I know people do that though.

FWIW, as an employer of (engineering) grads, a fresh Masters grad will cost me about the same as a BE with a year’s experience. The BE will probably be more immediate use to me - you come out of school knowing eff all about real working environments, and a year makes s hell of a difference. On the other hand the ME will likely have more potential - at a minimum theyve shown more staying power and commitment to learning. (This is all other things being equal, obviously: there’s a hell of a lot of variation between individuals). So I’m more likely to hire the BE for a technician-level role which I don’t expect/need to go too far or stay too long, and the ME for one which has growth opportunity and a learning curve so I need a keeper.

tl;dr it’ll take you longer to get a job than someone less qualified, but you have a better chance it’ll be a good one

Masters in what?

Knowing people personally will likely be more valuable than LinkedIn. If there are two dozen qualified candidates for a job, a simple “I know a guy who knows a guy and he says Bird Is The Word is not a flake” is often enough to tip the scales.

Thanks for the ‘71 Plymouth. That’s my jam.

Yeah, it’s unfortunate how the university industry has convinced young people they need more expensive degrees to get a job. The only ones that are profiting from this are the universities themselves.

It’s about expectations of job satisfaction. It costs money and energy to get a new hire on board, so an employer doesn’t want that person to be dissatisfied and quit within a year to go to a job that they are appropriately qualified for.

Don’t put off the search. In this job market my firm questions why an engineer (you may not be an engineer, but this is primarily who I hire) didn’t land a job prior to graduation, with the concern that it indicates a lack of motivation. If you graduate without a job, be prepared to address that concern with employers.

That is a tough one, sorry. MBA’s are one of those things that are usually going to be looked at after experience. Typically an employer is going to either be looking for someone with experience in the field who wanted to move up and got an MBA or paying for someone from their current team to do online/night courses to get their MBA (that’s what we do at my current job). What is your Bachelor’s degree in?

Kinja'd!!! LimitedTimeOnly @ opposite-lock.com > My bird IS the word

I have accepted “dedication to school” before, although I find that I am still suspicious about the true level of interest in being in a job unless the candidate describes an unusual circumstance. Bear in mind that on occasion their classmates have already been interviewing with me during the school year, so what makes this other person different in that regard? So, that person needs to stand out in some other way to compensate.

Having said that, just because someone is making a point of finding a job while in school does not mean they are going to be a great employee, it’s just a quantifiable item.

I recommend avoiding describing your job search as finding a position that properly values you. That is only one side of the relationship, and you should be able to show that you understand that there are two sides (which you just may not have included in your comment). So, maybe it would be that you had not yet found a position where you felt that your education would be understood as the asset that it (hopefully) is, and your skills (thanks to the masters) could be well utilized in a way that benefited the company and also engaged you. Or something.

“general management”. that covered pretty much everything. I didn’t specialize until grad school because I didn’t want to lock myself into something I didn’t like.

Gotcha. Have you looked into working for a consulting firm - the kinds that companies hire to solve their management/marketing problems? I would think that could be a place to go that would value someone coming right out of school with the additional knowledge from the MBA and give you a chance to move up and make a career out of it.

Kinja'd!!! My bird IS the word > FTTOHG Has Moved to https://opposite-lock.com

I’m looking everywhere. the consulting firms I have looked at haven’t had the best applications, or ones that I really felt confident with. I am positive I can find a job somewhere, I just wanted to skip a few years by going straight through grad school. That doesn’t look to be the case.

Did that masters degree teach you a skillset that you need for this job? Or is it just to fulfill a requirement?

Kinja'd!!! My bird IS the word > imadick
04/17/2018 at 13:19

Kinja'd!!!0

That seems to be up to opinion. The MBA is a requisite for most high-paid positions, but if you don’t have the accompanying experience then apparently it means nothing. with business, it’s alot of snobbery mostly, since it’s not really “quantitiative”

this kind of bullshit is ridiculous. Getting a expensive degree (and MBAs seem to be the worst for this) just to get approval from some snobs is crazy.

hate to say it, but it’s kind of necessary. Since it’s so prevalent, and you can get a job “anywhere” or at least at any company, they need some way to weed people out. at the end of the day it’s who you know, what you’ve done than what kind of person or how smart you are, because it’s impossible to truely tell that in an interview. Business school just means you were able to put up with alot of bullshit, you can get through it without really “learning” anything. I certainly learned a few things though.
